Method #2—Formal Surveys

Once you’ve done your first round of research, you should have a good idea of a few topics your first course could be built around. Now it’s time to further clarify things by asking more direct questions using a formal survey.

•Survey your email list. Create a brief survey with Google Forms (which is a free tool) and email it out to your list. This survey should have questions geared to their current frustrations, desires, and so on.

•Keep it short. The fewer questions, the better, as people are busy and will get irritated if the survey is too long. Give them mostly multiple-choice questions because they’re the fastest to answer.

•Incentivize them to fill it out. I usually offer to give away something awesome with a random drawing to entice people to fill out the survey. This could be a one-hundred-dollar gift card to a relevant store or website or a free sixty-minute coaching call with you. A little incentive can go a long way to getting participation.

•Use multiple-choice questions (to get percentages). These should be leading questions about what type of products they currently have and like, what they feel they need or want the most right now, and what their biggest problem is at the moment. With a tool like Google Forms, you can get pie charts that automatically update with each survey submission, showing you instantly and visually what your people want the most.

•Include an open-ended question (to get their actual words). Having at least one final question where respondents can write out their answer in their own words will give you powerful material to use when creating sales copy (more on that in chapter 9).
